Quilted Coasters

As the holidays approach here is a great craft that you can do in less than a day. These quilted coasters are an excellent use of any leftover fabric especially extra quilting squares. Get creative and mix and match colors and patterns to make fun decorative coasters. They make great housewarming gifts or festive decor. Make a couple extra and gift them to someone you know to brighten their day.

Materials: Fabric, batting, pins, pen, scissors, thread, sewing machine
Materials: Fabric, batting, pins, pen, scissors, thread, sewing machine

Materials

  • Fabric (I typically like cotton)
  • Batting
  • Sewing machine (Can also sew the edges by hand)
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Ruler
  • Iron

Steps

  1. Cut the fabric into 5 inch squares
  2. Cut the batting into 4 inch squares squares
Two 5 inch fabric squares and one 4 inch batting square
  1. Iron the fabric to have a 1/2 inch overlap around all four edges
Iron a half inch overlap around each edge of the fabric
  1. Place the batting under the folds of one side of fabric
Batting inside one of the fabric squares
  1. Pin the top piece of fabric to the batting and the bottom side
Pin the fabric and batting sandwich
  1. Sew along the edges and remove pins
Sew around the edges
  1. Optional: Add decorative stitching across the coaster similarly to making a quilt. This is not needed but can add some more design to your coasters.

Notes

  • Leftover quilting squares work particularly good since they are already cut to the right size. You can even create more intricate designs by sewing pieces together and cutting just like you would for regular quilting
  • The thickness of the batting is up to you on how thick you like your coasters to be. I typically like a medium thickness so the cup feels solid on the table but still offers protection.
Finished quilted coasters

Remember that nothing has to be perfect so not to be too worried if the edges are not perfectly square. Enjoy the process and have fun!
